County 911 staff brief council on planned radio system upgrade; loan and appropriation expected

Henry County emergency communications staff briefed the Henry County Council on Jan. 8 about a proposed radio-system upgrade with Motorola that would move the county from a primarily wireless VHF setup toward a wireline connection to the state system.
Staff said a wireline connection would provide priority on the state system, improve paging and enable future capabilities such as automated fire dispatching that the county's current configuration will not support. Commissioners previously approved moving forward with Motorola and financing the purchase through Citizens State Bank; staff said the bank approved the loan this week.
Because the project was not in last year's budget cycle, county staff said they will request an additional appropriation at a future meeting. No payments have been made, and staff said the project cannot advance until an initial invoice from Motorola is received and the council approves appropriation of funds from the PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) fund.
Staff indicated they would return next month with figures and a formal request for additional appropriation so the council would be prepared to act when invoices arrive.
