North Bend proclaims January 2025 as National Mentoring Month

Mayor Mary Miller read a proclamation at the Jan. 7 council meeting declaring January 2025 as National Mentoring Month in the City of North Bend.
The proclamation recognized volunteer mentors and highlighted Empower Youth Network’s Youth Success Mentoring program, saying the program serves Snoqualmie Valley Schools and has grown since 2017. Program coordinator Kathy Hyland and mentor Amy McGee attended; McGee told the council the program’s volunteers mentor 158 students across the Snoqualmie Valley and Riverview School Districts and that a typical commitment is one hour per week.
The proclamation — read aloud by Mayor Miller — included findings stated in the text about mentoring outcomes (for example, statements about differences in school attendance, drug and alcohol use, and college enrollment) as part of the rationale for the proclamation. Mayor Miller concluded the proclamation by encouraging interested residents to contact Empower Youth Network and thanking current mentors for their service.
Council members and staff who spoke during the meeting thanked the mentoring program volunteers for their work; the council did not take a formal vote on the proclamation (it was read and presented during citizen comments and ceremonial business).
