The Nominations and Appointments Committee discussed Monday a procedural change to hold interviews only when more than one applicant is scheduled, a measure intended to reduce single-applicant meetings.
Counselor Chris Miller and committee staff said the plan would limit meetings to instances when multiple applicants require interviews. Counselor Vanessa Campos said she supported the idea but cautioned against delaying applicants who are ready to serve and whose vacancies have been open for a long time.
Committee staff said they would email members before automatically scheduling and would consider the urgency of reappointments versus new applicants. Staff also noted boards and authorities do not all meet monthly, so timing between board meetings could mitigate delays. The committee did not adopt a formal policy during the meeting; members agreed to use staff communications to gauge whether to hold a meeting or defer until more applicants are available.
The committee noted a likely pause in meetings until February unless multiple candidates are ready. Staff said they would follow up with applicants and the mayor’s office when necessary to reduce hold times for vacancies.
