Commercial House special event: The council approved a special event request from Commercial House for the third annual "Bibs and Brews" on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The one-day event will run noon–4 p.m. with parking-lot use from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. for setup and takedown; activities include live music, outdoor games, a chili cook-off and vendors. Organizer Brianne Laporte said, "We're just super excited. Third year, we've had a great turnout... We usually get around 10 to 15 [contestants]." The motion authorizes use of the city's portion of the municipal parking lot and use of the social district for serving alcohol. The motion passed by voice vote.
Main Street water main soil borings: The council authorized $12,825 for soil borings on the Main Street Water Main Replacement project and awarded the work to G2 Consulting Group. City Manager John said the project lies within the MDOT right of way and that soil borings (ten borings) are required for the MDOT permit. Staff warned that if contamination (such as old fuel tanks) is encountered, the city would likely bear the initial cost to address it. The motion passed by voice vote.
City Hall HVAC repairs and controls update: Council approved awarding the City Hall rooftop air-conditioning replacement and control system updates to Tony's Heating and Cooling for $206,460, with costs allocated across the general fund, major street, local street, TIFA, sanitary sewer and water funds. Staff asked the TIFA board to consider covering 30% of the project cost. The staff estimate for delivery is about 17 weeks, with installation anticipated around June 1. Staff noted the building currently lacks functioning air conditioning; the council approved the award by voice vote.
Library board appointment: The council appointed Heather McAllister to fill a vacancy on the library board for a term expiring June 30, 2025. City Manager John said McAllister is the city clerk and has prior experience as a library director in Mount Clemens. The motion to appoint passed by voice vote.
Other calendar and staff notes: Staff outlined upcoming projects advertised for bid, demolition of a city-owned house to be used for police and fire training, and several community events including a blood drive Jan. 24 and a craft-supply swap Jan. 25. The council also announced the quarterly workshop and routine board/committee schedules.
