City launches new beautification crew; EcoPark bid revisions await grantor approval

Public-works staff reported progress this week on a newly created Streets Beautification division and an update on EcoPark funding and bidding.
Beautification: Public Works said it has recruited four new crew members and begun medial pressure washing, litter control, sidewalk cleaning and a new Adopt-a-Road outreach effort. Staff reported median pressure washing about 90% complete on major corridors and said sidewalk pressure washing and repairs are underway with a target to complete the main corridors by the end of February. Staff also said it is compiling a photo inventory of pavement markings, signs and sidewalks on county and state roads so the city can request repairs or coordinate work with Palm Beach County and FDOT.
Commissioners praised the work and asked staff to target key corridors, include Quantum Boulevard and MLK Boulevard in the program and ensure contractors flag sidewalk defects that require county or private-owner action. Staff said it will continue preparing corridor inventories, replace damaged trees and pursue standardized median landscaping to lower long-term maintenance costs.
EcoPark: staff also reported on EcoPark (Quantum Boulevard) funding. Bids returned well above the city’s estimate; the consultant revised the design to fit the city’s $870,000 budget and staff submitted the reduced scope to the grantor for approval. Staff said one low bidder declined to honor the original price during the hold period, the project team adjusted scope to fit the budget, and the city is awaiting the grantor’s approval to proceed with the revised scope.
Next steps: beautification crews will continue corridor cleaning and compile the inventory for county and state partners; staff will return with grantor responses for EcoPark and will resume procurement if the reduced-scope plan is approved.
