Mentor Exempted Village held a tax budget hearing on Jan. 7, 2025, during which Chief Financial Officer Mister Wade outlined preliminary revenue and expense estimates and the schedule for formal approval.
Mister Wade said the hearing is a regulatory requirement and summarized the next steps: the board will approve a spreadsheet version of the tax budget on Jan. 14, the CFO will submit that to the auditor, and the district typically holds another tax budget hearing in March. "This will be the quickest meeting we have all year," Wade said, and he described the hearing as a document-level presentation rather than the formal approval step.
Wade told the board the tax-budget figures posted in the newspaper and online (a legal notice ran "on 27th"). He said the document the board received is an explanatory version and that the formal approval will use the spreadsheet. He said the figures "come out to be" roughly $85 million for the general fund (the precise transcript figure for the general fund is unclear) and $1,046,000 for the permanent fund that voters approved. Wade also said the district's expense forecast has in the past exceeded those amounts and that the tax budget is intended to justify the need for the voted levy to cover forecasted costs.
Wade noted possible additional revenues such as sales of buses, event ticketing and shared services, adding that shared services often reduce costs. He closed by inviting questions and stating, "Any questions? That concludes my report."
After the report the board moved to adjourn. A motion to adjourn was made and seconded; a roll-call vote recorded affirmative responses from members present and the meeting was closed.
The hearing was brief and procedural: it presented a preliminary budget justification and timetable rather than adopting final appropriations. Formal adoption of the tax budget is scheduled for Jan. 14, after which the CFO will forward the approved figures to the auditor and the board anticipates a follow-up hearing in March if required.
