At the Jan. 6 meeting, Homewood School District 153 Superintendent Dr. McAllister described the district's recent teacher institute day as a staff-focused wellness event intended to support educator mental and physical health.
"Today was a teacher institute day, and quite honestly, it's one of the best days of the school year," Dr. McAllister said. He called the event an "annual wellness day" that emphasized mental well-being, physical health and appreciation of the arts.
Board President Shelley Peck led three sessions during the institute and was singled out by the superintendent. New board member Christine Scully also led a session in which participants made lanyards for staff identification, and Kathy Schaeffelen, the district's director of curriculum, coordinated the day.
Dr. McAllister said he attended two sessions on emotional well-being and that staff response was positive. He told the board the work helps staff "take care of ourselves...so that we can take care of our kids and our families."
The superintendent said the institute day prepared staff to welcome students back the following day. No policy changes or budget items were proposed in the report.
