Wade Lyles, Montgomery County Emergency Management Director, updated the commission on storm damage from recent tornadoes, confirmed three touchdowns in the county and said the county is operating a warming center as a cold weather system approaches.
Lyles said the county recorded "3 confirmed touchdowns in Montgomery County" during the tornado incident, and described significant damage to an industrial park. He told commissioners that emergency response was concentrated in rural areas and praised the cooperation of volunteer fire departments, the sheriff's office and county engineering teams.
On sheltering, Lyles said a warming center is open at 3446 LeBron Road (the former Floyd Magnet School band room). He reported 16 people used the warming center on the night referenced and said capacity for the site is operated informally; he described a practical safety limit of about 50 people though the sheriff and fire department list the building at about 100. "I wouldn't wanna put a 100 in there," he said.
Lyles warned that a forecasted shift to rain followed by temperatures near freezing could create icy roads Thursday into Friday, and urged caution for drivers, particularly in rural areas. "Bringing in rain and 20 degree weather makes the roads icy," he said, and noted that road crews and utility crews must wait until warnings pass before they can safely go out to clear hazards.
Commissioners praised Emergency Management's response; one commissioner thanked Lyles and his team for calling and coordinating during a night of tornadoes and for the debris cleanup the next day. Lyles said the county expects the cold weather to persist and that the warming center will remain available through the forecast period.
Why it matters: The county's emergency response and warming center operations affect residents in rural areas that sustained tornado damage and those who may need shelter during a multi‑day cold spell. Officials emphasized road safety and that many emergency responders stage until warnings pass to avoid injuries.
The commission received the report; no formal action was recorded in the information session.
