Mayor, council share community updates; council notes death of sanitation employee

During the Jan. 7 Jasper City Council meeting, members provided community announcements and condolences after the unexpected death of a city sanitation employee.
Council member Lehi thanked Parks and Recreation, the Jasper Family Service Center and volunteers for setting up a warming shelter at the Smith Center on Cratchfield Boulevard and noted community donations of food, blankets and gloves. Lehi said Farmstead has agreed to be a collection site for outgrown dog beds and sweaters so owners who cannot bring pets into the shelter can still receive supplies for their animals.
Mayor Cowan and others also encouraged attendance at the Walker College basketball game and the opening of the Glen Clem Memorial Museum at 6 p.m. that evening. The council thanked Adam Bolton for work on nuisance properties.
Council members and staff reported that a sanitation employee, identified in public remarks as Jay, suffered a medical emergency while on duty and subsequently died. Staff said the employee's spouse works as a dispatcher for the police department. Council members said they were collecting donations through department efforts and will combine contributions to assist the family.
