The Miami Lakes Cultural Affairs Committee approved the nominations period, categories, eligibility and a $3,500 budget for its Women of Distinction awards brunch and agreed that the ceremony will be invitation-only.
The committee voted to open nominations on Jan. 13 and close them on Feb. 10, with winners to be selected at the committee meeting on Feb. 12. Nominees must live or work in Miami Lakes, the committee decided, and each nomination must include a minimum 100-word submission.
A committee member who presented the proposal provided a line-item budget and requested $3,500 to cover a brunch for about 60 guests. The presenter read the budget breakdown aloud: catering for 60 people ($1,935), awards ($502), flowers ($200), linens ($120), tables and chairs ($292), janitorial ($170) with a remaining contingency to cover additional guests or price changes. She said the proposal was a package and moved to accept it; the motion carried on a voice vote.
The committee confirmed six award categories: arts, business, education, government, health services and volunteer. Members debated whether to accept nominations only from residents or from people who live or work in Miami Lakes; they voted to restrict nominations to those who live or work in the town limits.
Organizers said they had requested the mayor as keynote and were awaiting a response; they also identified a backup speaker. The committee agreed each winner would have approximately six to eight guests at a reserved table.
The committee voted the event will be invitation-only and instructed staff to post the nomination form and instructions once the rules and dates were finalized. Staff noted the town newsletter and online channels will be used for promotion as soon as the nomination window opens.
