He said the review for declaring an emergency will include the mayor, the police chief and the public works director; he suggested a threshold of about 6 inches before convening that discussion.
Columbia’s police chief reported temporary, targeted closures at Park School to protect students and pedestrians. Officers erected barricades during school pickup and drop‑off times and issued tickets for violators to discourage unsafe parking and double‑parking. The chief said officers will continue enforcement and barricades at high‑risk times; when barricades are not in place, drivers resume unsafe practices, the chief said, making the closures necessary to protect children.
Mayor Lutz said street-cleaning priorities remain downtown commercial areas, school zones and fire stations, then neighborhood streets, with advance notice to residents when crews will plow particular blocks. He asked residents to move vehicles when notified so crews can clear to the curb and avoid additional night operations if residents move cars.
