District administrators said the changes are designed to give 8th graders earlier, repeated exposure to the high school’s academic and extracurricular offerings and clearer information when they choose 9th‑grade courses.
David Steinberg, who led the presentation on the 8th‑to‑9th transition, said the district this year will bring every 8th grader from Southwoods and Harry B. Thompson middle schools to the high school over a four‑day schedule so students can tour departments and speak with high‑school teachers and current students. He also described a new, standalone 9th‑grade curriculum guide and said the peer leadership course will move to an alternate‑day schedule to free a 0.5‑credit slot and increase scheduling flexibility for incoming 9th graders.
