Open-enrollment window opens Jan. 7 as Granville County begins consolidated school assignments

Granville County Public Schools opened its 2025-26 open-enrollment transfer window on Jan. 7, the district announced during the board meeting. The online window runs through Feb. 4; families without internet access may get paper forms at school data managers.

Miss Shelby Hunt, who presented the enrollment process, said parents must fill out an application for each student if they want to transfer outside their attendance zone or to retain an approved out-of-zone seat. Hunt said the district will follow the student reassignment timeline set by the superintendent and that families will be notified of placement decisions by Feb. 24. Granville Academy and Granville Early College use separate applications but participate in the same notification timeline.

Superintendent Dr. Winborn and staff stressed that the district will not provide bus transportation outside a student’s attendance zone; parents who choose out-of-zone placement must provide transportation. Miss Hunt said capacity is monitored school-by-school and that “a lottery system may be utilized for any school for which applications exceed capacity.” Board members had previously reviewed lottery criteria.

The board also reminded families that if a student is currently attending a school outside their base zone but does not complete the open-enrollment form during this window, the student’s seat at the out-of-zone school is not guaranteed and the student may be returned to the base school.

Several board members asked about transfers for families who move in midyear; Hunt said staff maintain a spreadsheet and handle midyear transfer requests case-by-case before the next open window.

The district said it will publicize the window via social media, school websites, calls, mailed letters and school tours; staff said they had already mailed notices in December to give families advance notice.
