Public comment: White Cane Day awareness and a covered pickleball court

During the Oct. 13 public-comment period several residents highlighted community events and local recreational needs.
Andrew and Colette Arvidsson of the Anacortes Lions urged support and awareness for White Cane Day. Andrew Arvidsson, president of the Washington Council of the Blind, described the white cane as a mobility tool that enables independence; he invited council members to try vision-impairment simulation glasses and asked the public to stop for people using white canes and guide dogs so they can cross streets safely.
Catherine Strandberg asked the council about the possibility of covered pickleball courts in Anacortes. Strandberg said she uses a covered facility in Mount Vernon with 10 courts that are full and noted the sport’s popularity across ages. Parks staff told the speaker they are working on pickleball issues and invited her to follow up with the parks department.
Council and staff took no formal action during public comment but acknowledged the speakers and pointed them to the appropriate city staff to continue work on awareness and facilities.
