City broadband staff reported progress on the municipal fiber utility during the Oct. 13 council meeting and presented Ordinance 5007 for first reading, an update to the municipal code establishing an open data transport policy.
Finance and broadband staff said Access Anacortes has 2,813 customers in service and about a 55% take rate — above the business-plan target of 35% — and is collecting roughly $175,000 per month in subscriber revenue. Staff also reported more than 1,300 additional customer orders awaiting installation. An Economic Development Administration (EDA)-funded area remains under construction and is expected to be complete next spring.
The proposed municipal-code change (13.56.06) would establish rules for an open data transport policy and clarify the mayor’s authority to execute municipal-fiber contracts consistent with Chapter 1.3 of the code. Staff said the ordinance language was reviewed by the fiber committee and by councilmember McDougall.
Broadband business manager Jim Lemberg — a key staff leader on the project — is retiring this month; staff and council members thanked him for his work. The ordinance was presented as a first reading and may return for a second reading and final action at a future meeting.
