BSEE webinar on Vineyard Wind blade failure moved to Feb. 3; residents urge in-person dialogue

The Select Board and several residents discussed the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's (BSEE) upcoming public webinar about the Vineyard Wind turbine blade failure and a community push for more interactive engagement.

Libby (Staff member) announced the BSEE session had been rescheduled from Jan. 14 to Monday, Feb. 3, citing BSEE's need to process about 500 submitted questions. "They will not be going through question by question," Libby said; BSEE will compile themes and prepare comprehensive responses.

During public comment, Madeline Hay, who identified herself as a coalition member with Keep Nantucket Wild and ACT for Wales, said the pre-submitted question format limited two-way dialogue and proposed an in-person conversation with BSEE representatives. "Democracy really thrives on dialogue and dynamic exchange of ideas," Hay said, urging the board to request an in-person session so community voices can be heard live.

Select Board members acknowledged community interest and recommended outreach to invite affected residents and ensure the Feb. 3 webinar is well publicized. One board member thanked residents for their robust participation and said the volume of questions shows how engaged the community is.

No formal action was taken other than noting the new webinar date and to expand outreach for the event.

Next steps: Staff to publicize the Feb. 3 webinar and consider whether additional opportunities for live, in-person discussion with BSEE are feasible and appropriate.
