Students from Runlet Middle School's robotics club demonstrated robots and described their design and engineering process during the board's Jan. 6 "Celebration of Learning" segment.
Why it matters: The demonstration showcased hands-on STEM instruction and after-school enrichment in Concord middle schools and offered the board a direct look at student learning outcomes.
Jay Rishaw, Runlet's middle school principal, introduced the coaches and students and said the club develops problem-solving, engineering and programming skills. Several seventh- and eighth-grade students described their robots and design choices: Jackson Proya (7th) explained his "tank bot" pushes blocks to goals; Grace Johnson (7th) described modifying a claw to pick up multiple block types; Marshall Simonton (7th) showed a "skyscraper bot" adapted to collect larger red blocks worth more points; Levi Wilson described added omnidirectional wheels to align with targets; Wesley Kelly (8th) described counterweights to prevent tipping; and others explained rebuilding, coding and iterative testing.
Coaches said students practice after school multiple days per week and that the program supports collaboration and curiosity. The board applauded the students and coaches and allowed a short hands‑on demonstration and a brief Q&A.
Next steps: The board acknowledged the program as an example of in-district STEM enrichment; no formal action was required.
