Brooker leaders ask for remaining funding to finish fire station after county paid half

Mayor Gene Melvin and Bradford County commissioners told the delegation the town of Brooker needs remaining funding to complete a new fire station and house a recently ordered engine. “We received half of the funding for the Brooker fire station,” Commissioner Durbody said, describing the county and state support to date and asking the delegation to pursue the balance.
Brooker leaders said the station will shorten response times to the Brooker area; Commissioner Durbody recounted a recent drowning response where firefighters reached the scene in 18 minutes and said faster local capacity could be life‑saving.
County commissioners and the county manager said the county has already committed funds (including ARPA dollars) to several projects and urged the delegation to consider finishing projects with county ‘‘skin in the game’’ rather than starting many new multiyear programs. Delegation members said the 2025 state budget will be tighter than recent years and that finishing partially funded projects generally stands a better chance in the current cycle.
No formal vote or appropriation was made at the meeting.
