Representatives speaking on behalf of a local STEM effort said the Virginia Children’s Engineering Council (VCEC) will partner with Suffolk Public Schools to expand hands‑on STEM programming and promote a seamless elementary‑to‑high‑school pathway.
Speakers emphasized cross‑curricular, hands‑on learning that connects math, science, social studies and English to engineering and renewable energy concepts. The presenters said the goal is to prepare students for future jobs — including careers that do not yet exist — by exposing them to engineering practices, coding and project‑based learning early in their school careers.
Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon III and other speakers told the board that the district is planning an Innovation Center because central office staff currently occupy space at Booker T. Washington Elementary School and the division needs to create additional classroom capacity to house the STEM Academy set to begin in the fall. The Innovation Center and the teacher‑pathways initiative were noted as informational items on the meeting agenda and will be discussed at the board’s next business meeting, the superintendent said.
District staff and volunteer STEM leads described staffing and volunteer support for summer STEM events and in‑school challenges, citing an example in which multi‑grade teams worked on engineering challenges combining social studies, science and mathematics with coding and computational thinking. The presentation highlighted collaboration between elementary, middle and high school students, and the role of teachers, gifted resources and academic coaches in supporting the work.
The VCEC partnership was presented as an early step in expanding district STEM infrastructure and programming; the Innovation Center planning item remains informational pending further board discussion at the next meeting.
