Granite board adopts preschool core curriculum after debate over digital materials and SEL emphasis

The Granite School District Board of Education voted to adopt a new Preschool Core Curriculum after a brief public discussion and staff explanation of how the district will use the materials.
Nanette Bridal, director of preschool services, told the board the curriculum includes a morning routine with uniting activities, a calming practice, partner activities and a “commit” portion that the curriculum calls the “safekeeper.” Bridal said the safekeeper is meant to reinforce classroom rules and social expectations. "And the safekeeper is the idea that I'm committing to helping my friends and myself be kind to each other and keeping each other safe," she said.
A board member raised two concerns before the vote: (1) the presence of electronic books and videos in the curriculum package and how the district will ensure teachers do not substitute screen time for teacher-led reading; and (2) objections to the curriculum’s strong emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL). Bridal responded that the district’s preschool policy is to minimize screen time and that every item available electronically also exists in hard copy for classroom use. She said coaches and training will emphasize teacher-led reading and responsive instruction rather than reliance on digital resources.
The board adopted the curriculum after a motion and second. During the roll-call discussion one board member registered a dissenting vote and requested that the reason for their vote be recorded in the minutes. The board chair confirmed that request would be noted.
Board discussion included a request from the dissenting member for a future study session on SEL and the district’s role in teaching social skills and dispositions. Bridal and other district staff said the curriculum aligns with the district’s strategic plan priorities.
The board’s adoption is a first formal step in implementing the curriculum; staff said training and coaching will be used to ensure classroom-level practices match the restrictions described during the meeting.
