The Stillwater Planning Commission on Jan. 7 voted to table a map-amendment request (MA24-15) for property at 5021 North Perkins Road until its Jan. 28 meeting so staff can provide more detail about uses allowed in the city’s Public zoning designation.
Diana, planning staff, explained that the application proposes rezoning several adjacent parcels — currently zoned a mix of agriculture, light industrial, small-lot single-family, office, two-family/multifamily and commercial general — to Public so the common owner, Independent School District No. 16, can use the consolidated site for a “school support facility and transportation vehicle parking.”
Commissioners pressed for clarity about what uses would be allowed in Public zoning and how the rezoning might affect nearby residential properties. "Public zoning is fundamentally a little different from the rest of the zoning districts. It is essentially whatever city council decides it can be used for," Diana said, noting that additional screening and landscaping requirements could still apply where public uses abut residential areas.
The chair moved to table the item to the Jan. 28 Planning Commission meeting to allow staff to return with a chart or more detailed explanation of allowed uses and potential buffers; the motion carried 5-0.
No formal action to rezone the property was taken; staff will provide the requested information and re-present the application at the Jan. 28 meeting.
