Lander County public works director Don Prince announces retirement; well and road projects continuing

Don Prince, Lander County public works director, announced his resignation at the board’s Jan. 6 meeting and said Jan. 31 will be his last day.
In his update Prince reported ongoing work at Well 6 (sandblasting and tank coating), hydrant repairs, sinkhole fixes and a new backflow installation associated with irrigation improvements on Main Street. He said a failing booster pump in Austin is included in the budget for replacement and will be moved to avoid vehicle strikes. Prince also described maintenance limits on roads that cross federal land: while the county owns many roads, maintenance cannot override U.S. Forest Service authority on designated Forest Service roads; county crews will perform passable maintenance where allowable.
Commissioners congratulated Prince on his retirement and thanked him for his service. The board did not take immediate action on succession or recruitment during the Jan. 6 session; staff and commissioners will follow county hiring protocols to fill the vacancy.
