District staff raised concerns Jan. 7 about attendees parking in fire lanes during large evening and weekend events, and described steps the district plans to take to prevent blocked fire lanes.
Chris (district staff) told the board the district has observed “the public completely filling our fire lanes” at bigger events and that staff are beginning an outreach campaign to remind event attendees about fire-lane restrictions and available alternate parking. Staff identified Peninsula High School as an example where additional parking is available at the Educational Service Center (ESC) and at Purdy depending on the event.
Planned measures include additional signage, temporary barriers such as cones and sandwich boards, a community communication campaign explaining parking alternatives, and possibly hiring or using volunteers to help steer traffic at events. The measures were presented as initial, low-cost steps to reduce safety risks while staff and the community continue the discussion.
Patrick (Director of Facilities) and other staff joined the presentation and answered clarifying questions; no formal action or vote was taken on the item because the presentation was an initial discussion.
Staff said these steps are intended to be implemented “coming soon” for larger events; no contracted costs or enforcement penalties were discussed at the meeting.
