Van Buren County commissioners re-elect chair, adopt amended bylaws and set 2025 schedule

Van Buren County commissioners elected Commissioner Randall Pete as chair and Commissioner Paul Shonkariel as vice chair and adopted updated bylaws that give the board authority to set meeting dates by resolution when conflicts arise.

The action came during the board's organizational meeting, when commissioners also discussed commissioner compensation and mileage reimbursement rules, finalized committee assignments and agreed to shift two regularly scheduled 2025 meetings to Thursdays to avoid conflicts with the Michigan Association of Counties conference and Veterans Day.

The vote to elect Pete followed a nomination from the floor and a voice vote; Pete then thanked colleagues, saying, "Your confidence is well founded, and I will not disappoint." The vice-chair nomination of Paul Shonkariel likewise carried on a voice vote. The board moved, seconded and approved the bylaws and procedures packet after amending language in Article 3.1 to allow the board to set a replacement meeting date by resolution when a regular meeting date falls on a holiday or other conflict.
