Auburn recognizes athletic director, reports gym floor completion; facilities staff to host state school construction tour

Auburn — The Auburn School Committee on Jan. 8 recognized Todd Sampson, athletic director at Edward Little High School, for receiving the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Citation Award and received updates on a recently replaced high‑school gym floor and on district facilities planning.
Superintendent Sue Dorris introduced Sampson and noted the NFHS Citation Award, presented Dec. 16 in Austin, Texas, recognizes long service and leadership in interscholastic athletics. Sampson was credited in committee remarks with 25 years of service, leadership roles in Maine interscholastic athletic administration and contributions to statewide and national athletics programs.
Committee members then heard a facilities update from Scott Anier (facilities/assistant superintendent). Staff reported that the new gym floor project, managed by All American Sports Flooring with Hussey Seating handling bleacher work, was completed earlier than some projections. The floor was repaired and bleachers adjusted in coordination with athletics schedules; construction teams worked through the holiday break and the gym reopened for practices and games in late December. Committee members said the district coordinated with local partners to find practice space while the work was underway.
Facilities staff also reported they will host a visit from the state School Construction and Renovation Committee and Scott Brown (Maine Department of Education) to tour the district’s seven targeted buildings: all six elementary schools plus Albert Middle School. Staff said they have been preparing applications and briefing principals so the touring committee can assess building conditions, enrollment demographics, and how facility needs affect educational delivery. Staff said they expect the School Construction Committee site visits next Monday through Wednesday and intend to convene a standing facilities committee meeting by the end of January.
Separately, in a City Council update, committee member Adam Platt described a recent joint workshop between the council and the school committee and noted the city has transferred three parcels to Auburn Housing as part of plans to pursue a Housing First development proposed to provide roughly 30 beds for the most vulnerable unhoused residents; staff said financing and approvals remain to be determined.
The committee also approved the consent agenda at the start of the meeting, and later moved into an executive session to discuss labor contract negotiations under 1 M.R.S.A. §405(6)(A).
