Police, fire chiefs report December 2024 activity; social-work referrals, Narcan uses noted

Michigan City public-safety leaders reported December 2024 activity to the Common Council on Jan. 7, including crime and enforcement figures, social-work referrals, and fire department call statistics.
Police Chief Marty Corley presented December figures and preliminary year-end data. Chief Corley said total arrests for December were 176 (11 fewer than November), including 30 juvenile arrests (11 more than November) and 146 adult arrests (22 fewer than November). Police reported 18 shots-fired calls (three fewer than November), seven firearms seized (two more than November), and 136 speeding-ticket events (18 fewer than November; reported as 9 citations and 127 warnings). The department reported 154 warrants issued with 91 served and 16 recalled. Chief Corley also noted 17 case reports generated from the Flock automated detection system with a mix of stolen-vehicle recoveries, driving offenses and theft reports.
Chief Corley highlighted the department’s social-worker program: social worker Jocelyn handled 35 contacts in the reporting period with referral sources listed as patrol, self-referrals and outside agencies. Referral types included mental-health calls (15), substance abuse/overdose (5), juveniles/runaways (5), homelessness or unstable housing (5), and others. Chief Corley read a success story in which the social worker connected an individual to a peer recovery coach, assisted with a move from a domestic-violence environment and arranged holiday assistance, and reported the department had not had further contact with that individual since.
Fire Chief Barrett Taylor reported December totals of approximately 389 calls (the records system showed 385 processed calls at the time because four incidents were still being finalized). The December breakdown included 5 fire calls, about 318 medical calls, 15 hazardous-condition responses, 3 service calls, 35 good-intent calls and 9 false alarms. Narcan was administered seven times during December emergency medical responses. Chief Taylor said the department responded to 4,994 calls in calendar year 2024, an increase of 249 calls from 2023.
Councilors thanked both chiefs for the reports and had no immediate follow-up requests.
