The Walled Lake City Council approved a staff-recommended allocation of $7,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds for program year 2026, splitting the amount evenly between two local organizations that provide emergency public services.
City staff said the packet recommended $3,500 for Haven to assist battered and abused spouses and children with emergency provisions — food, rent, mortgage, medical expenses and transportation — and $3,500 for Hospitality House to provide similar emergency services to low-income residents. “We have spoken with both of these entities and they're both very appreciative,” the staff presentation said.
Staff also notified the council that the county changed the CDBG process for the program-year 2026 funds: rather than a fixed allocation from HUD to each jurisdiction, funds will be scored and awarded from a countywide pot on a project-priority basis. The city will receive $7,000 to distribute for public services in 2026, but future program-year 2027 awards will be subject to the county’s new scorecard and competitive prioritization.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing. A council member moved to approve the staff recommendation and the motion passed by unanimous roll call.
Staff said the changes to county procedures arrived quickly for 2026 and the county will provide a scorecard for the 2027 application cycle. The city will plan for the new process and consider larger projects for future program years, subject to county priorities.
