Commission adopts tiered building-permit deposit ordinance

Rich County commissioners voted unanimously Jan. 8 to adopt amendments to the county building permit and certificate-of-occupancy ordinance that replace a single $2,000 refundable deposit with a tiered refundable deposit based on construction cost.
The adopted revision sets refundable deposit levels tied to estimated construction cost: $500 for projects under $100,000; $1,000 for projects between $100,000 and $200,000; and $2,000 for projects above $200,000. The ordinance change also clarified the types of projects that require the deposit and adjusted text describing when deposits are collected for construction and substantial renovation work.
County staff said the tiered approach is intended to more fairly align permit security with project size. Building staff reviewed the draft and reported no operational concerns. The commission approved a clean copy as presented and ordered the updated ordinance published and recorded.
