Lenoir City Schools approves first reading of student board member policy required by recent legislation

The Lenoir City Schools Board of Education on Oct. 23 approved the first reading of Policy 1.1021, which sets procedures for a student to serve as a board member in response to recent state legislation.
District staff told the board the policy implements a legislative requirement enacted this year that requires school districts to establish a process for student board members. The board said staff will work to identify a student in the spring who would begin serving on the board the following school year.
Board members discussed timing and attendance logistics for a student representative and noted the district will try to select a student in March or April so the student can participate beginning the next school year. The board indicated it intends for the student to attend as many meetings as possible but recognized scheduling challenges.
The motion to approve the first reading was made by Lacey Murray and seconded by Mitch Ledbetter; the vote passed unanimously among members present.
