Council members report local projects: Laurel Bay pathway finished; 278/170 interchange, stormwater and broadband updates

Several Beaufort County Council members used the Jan. 10 workshop's round-robin to report district-level project updates and community meetings.
Laurel Bay and pathways: Council member Joe reported the pathway in the Laurel Bay area that connects the air station to military housing has been completed. Joe said work by Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority to upgrade decades-old water infrastructure in parts of the northern county is underway.
170–278 interchange and signage: Multiple council members noted that temporary fixes at the 170–278 interchange are in place and appear to be functioning, though additional permanent signage and longer-term traffic solutions remain under consideration.
Stormwater and regional coordination: Council members described collaborative stormwater efforts with municipalities after recent storm events. Council member Passman and others said town and county officials are developing an island-wide drainage master plan to coordinate stormwater projects across municipal and county boundaries; County Administrator Mike Moore affirmed he wants to remain involved and receive staff-level updates to coordinate work.
Broadband and recreation needs: Council member Dawson said funds allocated by council will support northern-county broadband expansion and that community meetings on recreation-center upgrades are scheduled. Council members from multiple districts said local recreation facilities are at capacity and that expanded fields and facilities are a priority.
Other updates and scheduled meetings: Council members noted an upcoming joint roundtable invitation from the Town of Port Royal and the City of Beaufort (Jan. 16), a corridor/278 workshop proposed for March 21 related to bridge and corridor planning, and local meetings on library and transit topics. Council members also asked staff to publish committee/liaison rosters and to advertise events and meetings on the county calendar.
Ending: Council members encouraged residents to review published meeting calendars and staff said they will circulate liaison assignments and upcoming workshop details.
