Board approves renaming Ocean Avenue Elementary library to honor Megan M. Chuloski Mears

The Portland Board of Public Education unanimously approved renaming the Ocean Avenue Elementary School library for Megan Miller Chuloski Mears at its Jan. 7 meeting.
Board Member Bryden moved the consideration and action to approve the proposed name; Board Member Yousar(a) Ali seconded. "By roll call vote, please indicate whether you are in favor of the consideration action to approve the proposed naming of Ocean Avenue Elementary, library, to Megan, Malore Cholaskey Mears Library," Chair Lentz said when calling the vote. Doctor Warren conducted the roll call; all members present voted yes.
Superintendent Skallon read a list of donations earlier in the meeting and acknowledged community contributions. Board members said the naming recognizes volunteer and philanthropic work by Megan M. Chuloski Mears and her family. Board Member Ali Ali said after reviewing the nomination materials she supported the naming, citing the nominee's volunteer work at the school.
Board Member Noor had earlier suggested the board update its naming policy to clarify naming of smaller spaces (such as rooms or libraries rather than entire buildings); Chair Lentz said that policy work is on an upcoming agenda and that the naming policy update will be considered separately.
