Safety staff reports three recent work-comp claims; January training focused on slips, trips and winter risks

Laura, speaking for county safety and workers' compensation matters, told the Health and Safety Committee that three workers' compensation claims were reported in the last month of 2024: a canine handler sustained a bite to a finger, a corrections employee suffered a shoulder injury during an altercation with an inmate, and another employee was injured while assembling furniture.
"For the last month, the last month of 2024 we had 3 work comp claims reported, a canine handler...had a bite to the finger...in corrections we had an employee injured with a shoulder injury...and then we had 1 individual who was hurt assembling some furniture," Laura said. She said January's VECTOR training focused on slip, trip and fall safety, which she said are usually either the highest-frequency or the most costly workplace accidents.
Laura also discussed winter-safety precautions, including layering, proper footwear, the "penguin walk" technique on icy surfaces, three points of contact when entering/exiting vehicles, and the use of practical equipment such as boot warmers and Nordic poles to aid balance. She issued a consumer-product safety alert about recalled battery-operated socks that had caused burns in other incidents and urged staff to prefer tested, layered clothing and standard frostbite precautions.
