City of West Columbia officials recognized multiple employees and elected officials for service anniversaries at an unspecified January council meeting, presenting milestone pins for service intervals that included five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years.
"Once a year we take a moment to honor our employees who during the prior year, achieved a certain number of years of service," Carrie Garrett told the mayor and council as she opened the recognition segment. The city presented pins in five-year increments for milestones reached during calendar year 2024.
Recipients named in the meeting included, among others, Council members Joseph Dickey and David Moy (identified as elected in 2019), administrative staff Christy Fleming (office coordinator) and Jennifer Dowden (program administrator and FOIA manager), Sarah Johnson (finance director), multiple sworn officers and investigators in the police and fire departments, and a number of sanitation, utilities and water-plant staff. The city highlighted longer-tenure employees as well: BJ Unthank (20 years; previously a council member and since 2016 the city's director of economic development), several 25-year employees at water plants and maintenance, one 30-year employee (Chuck Jacobs, water-plant operator and lab technician), and Wilhelmina Frasier (35 years; deputy clerk of court and ministerial recorder).
Mayor and council members offered public thanks. "Thank you all so much for your service," the mayor said. City staff and family members in the audience were thanked for supporting employees' work.
The recognition portion was presented during the meeting's presentations and recognitions agenda item; no council action or vote was required for the acknowledgments.
