The Simsbury Zoning Commission on Jan. 6 unanimously approved an application to install a double-sided, non-illuminated freestanding sign for the Farmington Valley Diagnostic Center at 125 Latimer Lane.

The sign application (ZC-24-28) from the Capital Region Education Council, with Allison Ibbotson of Oriental Sign Group listed as the applicant, proposes a freestanding sign of about 11 square feet placed roughly 10 feet off the property line in an island at the southwest corner of Latimer Lane and Popmeadow Street. The commission approved the application subject to the signed plan dated 11/13/24, the landscaping plan noted in the record and completion of the Design Review Board’s suggested changes, including adding a black border on each post and meeting routine administrative zoning permit requirements.

In presenting the proposal, Allison Ibbotson, applicant with Oriental Sign Group, described the location and design, saying, “It’s gonna be right there in the island. It’s 10 feet off the property line,” and noted the Design Review Board asked that a black border be added to each end of the posts. The commission record also notes wetlands approval was obtained and that staff had reviewed and recommended the plan as amended.

A commissioner moved to approve the application as read into the record, including the assessor’s map and plan references. A second was recorded and the motion carried unanimously; the commission’s clerk recorded the vote as approved 6 to 0.

The commission discussion noted the sign replacement responds to a long period without a freestanding sign at that site and confirmed the property is located in the town of Simsbury. With the amendments and conditions included in the motion, the commission voted to approve the permit.

The approval was recorded as unanimous with no recorded abstentions.
