Tooele County opens hearing to consider sponsoring CDBG ladder-truck application for North Tooele Fire District

The Tooele County Council opened a public hearing on Jan. 7 to consider sponsoring an application by the North Tooele Fire District for Community Development Block Grant funding to buy a ladder truck.
Kevin Nunn, fire chief for North Tooele Fire District, said the district must have the county sponsor its application because, “according to the Community Development Act of 1974, we, as a unit of general local government … cannot as a special service district” apply directly. Christie (on the line) and county staff assisted the district with the application, Nunn said.
Nunn said the district is preparing an income survey required by the CDBG process; the survey will run about three weeks. He described the request as a purchase of equipment rather than a long-term contract and told the council that the state’s reporting and administration requirements are “relatively light” for an equipment purchase. He said the ladder-truck request was part of a roughly $1,000,000 funding pool for the year and that the award structure can be broken over two years.
Kim, the district’s grant writer, said she will handle application paperwork and thanked county staff for assistance. Kathleen Bonhat, a member of the Lake Pointe City Council, spoke in support and said a ladder truck would help the area’s economic growth by enabling larger buildings to meet fire-safety requirements.
Councilman Wardle moved to open the public hearing; Councilman Stromberg seconded. The council voted verbally in favor and opened the hearing. After public remarks, Councilman Hoffman moved to close the public hearing; Councilman Thomas seconded and the council closed the hearing by voice vote.
Ending: The hearing record will remain with the county while North Tooele Fire District completes the income survey and prepares a formal CDBG application; no final county sponsorship decision was recorded at the meeting.
