Carla Bowman elected deputy mayor by unanimous council vote
Summary
On Jan. 6 the Sumner City Council nominated and elected Council member Carla Bowman as deputy mayor; the nomination was the only one put forward and the council closed nominations and voted 7–0 to elect her.
The Sumner City Council selected Council member Carla Bowman as deputy mayor during the Jan. 6 regular meeting.
City Administrator Jason Wilson reviewed the nomination and voting process, noting that nominations do not require seconds and outlining the roll‑call voting procedure. "They do not require a second, so she'll just ask does anybody have anybody they want to nominate for deputy mayor," Wilson said while describing the council rules and the sequence for closing nominations and voting.
Council member Carla Bowman was nominated and no other nominations were made. The council formally moved to close nominations and then took a roll‑call vote; each council member cast their vote for "Bowman" and the clerk announced the election passed 7–0.
Why it matters: The deputy mayor presides over council meetings and performs mayoral duties in the mayor's absence under the council rules. Council members congratulated outgoing deputy mayor Pat Cole for her service and welcomed Bowman to the role.
Next steps: Bowman will serve as deputy mayor under the council rules until the council selects the next deputy mayor at its first regular meeting of the following January or as otherwise provided by council rules.
