Council approved a slate of appointments and committee assignments in a series of motions on Jan. 6, 2025.
The council voted 7–0 to reappoint Mariah Berry to the Park Board for a four-year term ending December 2028. The nomination was moved by Council Member Whelan and seconded by Council Member Strader; Berry spoke briefly and thanked council.
Per Resolution 24-1977, the mayor solicited nominations for mayor pro tem. Council Member Steve Whitaker was nominated by Council Member Whelan and elected mayor pro tem by a voice vote that the clerk recorded as carried 7–0.
Council also appointed members of the finance committee (Council Members Strader, Whitaker and Seater volunteered) by motion of Council Member Seater, seconded by Council Member Strader; the motion carried 7–0.
For intergovernmental representation, the council appointed delegates and alternates for Pierce County Regional Council (PCRC) and Sound Cities Association (SCA): Council Member Cedar will serve as delegate to both PCRC and SCA; alternates will be Council Member Hall (PCRC) and the mayor (SCA). The motion to approve those appointments was moved by Council Member Whelan and seconded by Council Member Hall and carried 7–0.
Council formed a public works/community development/public safety committee under existing council policy and appointed Council Member Whelan, Council Member Strader and Mayor Pro Tem Whitaker to the committee. The motion to appoint those members was moved by Council Member Seater and seconded by Council Member Hall; the motion carried 7–0. The committee’s initial meeting was set for Feb. 11 at 11:30 a.m. in the police conference room; staff recommended the committee determine its frequency and scope at its first meeting.
