The Davis County School District board swore in two newly elected members and chose leadership for the next two years at its Jan. 7 business meeting.
Alisa Allred Mercer and Joni Stevens took the oath of office administered by Tim Leffel, Business Administrator for Davis County School District. The oath included pledges to support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Utah and to "discharge the duties of my office with fidelity." The board then moved on to elect officers for the coming two-year term.
The new board president is Bridgette Gerard, who was nominated from the floor and won a voice vote by the board. "Thank you so much," Gerard said after the vote. Emily Price was elected vice president after a separate nomination and voice vote; the clerk announced Price received four votes, the number required for election under the board’s rules.
The meeting opened with public comment from three residents who praised the board and urged continued engagement with constituents. Tara Cooper, who identified herself as the founder of Utah Parents for Teachers, thanked the board and praised recent district priorities for supporting teacher aides and special education assistants. Jessica Horton, a Centerville parent and one of the founders of What Davis Read, thanked the board and district staff for their responsiveness and for individual acts of care by school employees. Melanie Mortensen, a resident, urged board members—especially newer members—to communicate proactively with constituents using email lists, private district groups or newsletters: "Please use, whatever means you can to be in contact with your constituents."
Leffel described the election procedure before nominations, saying nominations would be followed by a voice vote and that a candidate must receive four votes of the seven-member board to be elected; if no candidate reached four votes, the board would proceed to a secret ballot. The board followed that process: nominations were made for president and vice president, the nomination periods were closed, and voice votes were held. The board then adjourned and took photographs with the newly sworn members and their families.
The actions taken at the meeting were procedural—oaths of office and internal officer elections—and did not change district policy or appropriate funds. The public-comment speakers were explicitly reminded by the chair that board members cannot respond, deliberate, or take action on items raised during public comment but that the board would take note of remarks.
The board did not take other formal votes or adopt policies during this meeting.
