Blue Earth County approves $75,000 in opioid settlement funds for local peer-recovery group

Blue Earth County commissioners on Jan. 7 authorized $25,000 a year for three years — $75,000 total — from the county’s opioid settlement fund to support Beyond Brink, a local peer recovery program.
The funding request was presented by Josh Milo, deputy county administrator, who said the work group recommended the award because Beyond Brink provides peer recovery services that partner with local law enforcement, Mankato Police Department, human services and community corrections. Milo said Beyond Brink also responds to nonfatal opioid overdoses to provide support to individuals and families.
The county has previously directed opioid-settlement dollars toward early-intervention and youth-mental-health programs, Milo said, and the work group considered Beyond Brink’s services a complementary focus on adults. Commissioners moved and seconded the authorization; the motion carried.
The action authorizes the expenditure but does not attach additional contract language or reporting requirements in the motion. Commissioners who spoke in favor described the award as a use of settlement funds that expands services beyond prevention and youth outreach.
