Mayor Robert P. Magnus read a proclamation to the Oconomowoc Common Council on Jan. 7 declaring 2025 the sesquicentennial year for the City of Oconomowoc and designating Jan. 16 each year as City of Oconomowoc Day.
The proclamation recounts the community's history as presented in the reading: reference to the Potawatomi and Winnebago peoples as the ancestral inhabitants of the area; the naming of the place as Oconomowoc (said in the proclamation to translate to "where the waters fall or meet"); founding milestones cited in the proclamation include naming as a settlement in 1846, incorporation as a village in 1865, and becoming a city in 1875. The proclamation also highlights 19th- and 20th-century growth, transportation links, and the city's resort-era visitors.
"I, Robert P Magnus, mayor of the city of Oconomowoc, on behalf of our entire community, do hereby proclaim the year 2025 to be the celebration of Oconomowoc's sesquicentennial and do proclaim that January 16th every year hereafter to be the City of Oconomowoc Day," Mayor Magnus read during the meeting.
Council and staff gathered for photographs after the proclamation reading, and the mayor invited departments, organizations and residents to participate in sesquicentennial activities during 2025.
