Two newly elected members of the City of Chaska City Council, Josh Benesch (Ward 2) and Leah Shevlin (Ward 4), were sworn into office during the council meeting on Jan. 6, 2025. The council recessed briefly immediately afterward for group photographs.
The oaths were administered as part of the meeting’s opening ceremonial items. Each new council member repeated the oath to support the constitutions of the United States and the State of Minnesota and to “faithfully and impartially discharge the duties” of their office. After the formal oath, both Benesch and Shevlin offered brief remarks thanking family members and neighbors for their support.
Former Mayor Mark Wind Shuttle addressed the council as a visitor and congratulated the new members, reminding them of the preparatory work required of elected officials and urging them to use the resources available from longer-serving members and city staff. The meeting chair then recommended a five-minute recess to allow group photographs; Council Member Graf moved the recess and Council Member Benesch seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote and the meeting briefly recessed.
The swearing-in took place before the council took up its regular agenda, including approval of minutes and routine consent items. The ceremonial oath establishes Benesch and Shevlin as full members of the council and eligible to participate in votes and other official duties.
