The Fuquay Varina Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a $191,455.88 contract with Pavement Technology Inc. to apply a preservation treatment to roughly 11.3 miles of town streets, a measure staff said will extend the service life of treated roads by about five years.
Engineering Director Matt Poland presented the project and the low bid, saying the contract was publicly advertised and bids opened Dec. 6, 2024. "The pavement preservation project involves applying a preservative and a restorative treatment to approximately 11.3 miles of the town street network," Poland said. He told commissioners construction is expected in spring 2025 with completion anticipated by July.
Poland and staff described the treatment as similar to a sealcoat intended to extend a pavement's service life and noted the town employs a capital-predictor model to select appropriate treatments for each street. Commissioners asked whether the town had used this product before; Poland said this specific product was new to the town but used by neighboring municipalities.
Commissioners also confirmed funding sources. Poland said the project uses the town's existing street funding and that the allocation comes from the town's Powell Bill and related funds; a board member noted the unit cost is a relatively low per-mile investment compared with full resurfacing.
A motion to award the contract and authorize the town manager to execute the agreement after attorney review carried by voice vote.
Poland said the project is part of an ongoing pavement-management strategy that includes other treatments and full overlays where warranted by the pavement-condition model.
