A Bethlehem resident told city council she found a bullet and a hole in her car and urged the city and neighbors to help improve safety near North New Street.
Kathy Orndock described the incident to council during public comment, saying her car had been shot and that a .380‑caliber round was removed from her dashboard; she asked for more police attention and community coordination to protect children and neighbors. “I parked the car in the rear of the building, and, my car has been shot,” Orndock said. She also told the council she pays about $1,770 a month in rent for a 725‑square‑foot unit and said the incident has left her and neighbors anxious.
Council and public-safety staff responded that the police department has increased its presence in the area when staffing allows and that a detective is actively working the case. The chief of police reported the Liquor Control Board has held a hearing related to a nearby nuisance and the city is awaiting the board’s ruling; police said they are providing additional patrols on weekend evenings and early mornings as personnel allow.
Why it matters: A resident reports an apparent shooting that damaged a private vehicle and expressed concern for nearby children and businesses; police said they are investigating and have stepped up patrols in the area while administrative enforcement (Liquor Control Board action) is pending.
Details from the meeting: - Resident report: car shot; a cartridge or round recovered and a hole in the door; ongoing detective investigation (resident statement to council). - Police response: increased presence in the area when personnel and call volumes permit; detective assigned and actively working the resident’s case; Liquor Control Board hearing held and city awaiting the outcome before additional administrative steps may be taken.
No formal council motion or new public-safety ordinance was taken at the meeting. Council members invited the resident to speak with them and police individually after the meeting and reiterated that contact information for council members is available on the city website.
