Superintendent says NTI day and calendar adjustment planned after snow closures

Superintendent Dr. Matthews told the Shelby County Board of Education the district used a nontraditional instruction (NTI) day because roads and school parking lots were unsafe during recent weather.
Dr. Matthews said the district prepared and distributed a video explaining the decision and that work crews have been clearing parking lots and sidewalks to make schools safe for staff and students. “So we actually had 1 video cut, and we had to cut a new video very quickly,” Dr. Matthews said. He added that crews had done “an excellent job” on parking lots and that the district continues finishing work related to holidays and other adjustments.
Dr. Matthews emphasized bus operations as a central concern when deciding whether to hold in-person classes. He told the board that turnarounds for school buses and two-lane road access must be considered even after a single lane becomes passable.
The superintendent told the board the district will bring a calendar adjustment to a future board meeting to account for the closure; he said the board will vote on that adjustment at a later date.
Dr. Matthews also noted the district is still hiring early-childhood educators and bus drivers and said turnover this year has been relatively low.
