The Select Board on Jan. 7 voted to approve two Class 1 dealer license applications submitted by Mag Retail Holdings, HYD LLC, doing business as McGovern Hyundai of Danvers and McGovern Genesis of Danvers, to operate from an interim location at 24 Newbury Street while a new dealership campus is constructed at 647 Andover Street.
Nancy McCann, attorney for the applicant, said the Newbury Street site is an existing vacant commercial building on a roughly 6.9‑acre parcel that previously housed outdoor furniture retail. McCann said the applicants anticipate the temporary use lasting 12 to 18 months while construction proceeds at the approved Andover Street site, and that the interim location has room for inventory, customer parking and about 15–20 employees.
Board members asked about operational details including hours of operation and trash pickup; McCann confirmed the site plan includes a dumpster and that town bylaws already regulate trash‑pickup hours (no pickup prior to 7 a.m.). The board discussed traffic concerns at the nearby Route 1 on‑ramp; McCann said planning review determined the dealership is a low traffic generator and that a separate traffic study was not required by the Planning Board. Members of the public raised concerns about congestion at the Route 1 ramps and compared the site to the existing Cumberland Farms curb geometry.
The board approved the applications by roll call. The applicant and representatives present said they would be available to answer follow‑up questions and that the temporary arrangement would allow productive reuse of an otherwise vacant commercial property.
Ending
The licenses authorize the temporary operation of Hyundai and Genesis dealerships at 24 Newbury Street while construction of the permanent facility at Andover Street proceeds; the applicant said it expects the location to be used for approximately 12–18 months and that future plans for the site include potential continued dealership use through a separate permitting process.
