Commissioners approve application for $1.83 million in GDOT maintenance funds for resurfacing

The Bullock County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve an application to the Georgia Department of Transportation for Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) funds in the amount of $1,831,816.96 for county road resurfacing.
County Engineer Brad Deal explained the LMIG program uses motor fuel tax revenue and a formula based on road mileage and population to allocate funds. Deal said the county typically uses LMIG money for resurfacing and supplements that program with T‑SPLOST funds. He reminded the board that a 30% local match is required for the county to receive and spend LMIG funds.
The engineer displayed a proposed resurfacing list and told commissioners the proposal included $715,000 reserved for patching and ad hoc resurfacing in subdivisions, and that some funds would be used for crack sealing to extend pavement life. Commissioners raised a local concern about Brooklyn Denmark Road, which runs in front of a school and may see construction traffic; Deal said the list could be edited to avoid paving areas that might be torn up by imminent school construction.
After limited public comment requesting confirmation that a recurring local pothole would be addressed, the board voted to apply for the LMIG award and to proceed with the proposed resurfacing program subject to any edits the board directs.
No contracts were awarded at the meeting; the motion authorized staff to submit the grant application and continue planning the resurfacing work.
