Lee County School Board approves consent agenda; superintendent outlines priorities and plans Tallahassee visit

The Lee County School Board on Jan. 7 approved the meeting agenda and the consent action items by recorded vote and then heard Superintendent Dr. Carlin outline district priorities and plans for legislative advocacy in Tallahassee.
The board voted to approve the evening's agenda after a motion by Board Member Mister Bridal and a second by Board Member Miss Giovanelli; the chair recorded the vote as 7-0. Later the board approved the consent action items by a recorded vote listed in the minutes as 7-0.
The approvals came at the start of the board's regularly scheduled meeting. After the votes, Dr. Carlin introduced a new assistant principal, Yamara Leonard Alijo, who will serve at Bonita Springs High School and was welcomed by the board and superintendent.
Dr. Carlin used her remarks to reiterate the district's top priorities: school safety, student achievement, recruitment and retention of staff, fiscal responsibility and parental engagement. "Our number one priorities: school safety, student achievement, making sure we're working very hard on recruitment and retention, being fiscally responsible," Dr. Carlin said.
She told the board and public the district team is "very serious about the work" and that board members and staff will travel to Tallahassee next week to advocate for policy and funding changes aligned with the district's 2025 legislative priorities; she said the board will report back at the next meeting.
The meeting also included a recognition: the board honored Chief Human Resources Officer Angelo Monte Montero for winning the HR Today Association's 2024 HR Excellence Award in Education for the North American region. The superintendent and board offered public congratulations.
Board members used the "good of the order" portion of the meeting to communicate upcoming events and community outreach. The board announced a town hall set for Jan. 23 in District 1 at Cape Coral High School and reminded the public that the next workshop is Feb. 4 at 1 p.m., followed by an action meeting at 6 p.m.
With no further business, the chair adjourned the meeting at 6:39 p.m.
