Port Washington honors new fire and police leaders; mayor proclaims Jan. 9 National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

The Port Washington Common Council hosted pinning and recognition ceremonies at the start of its Jan. 7 meeting for new fire and police leadership and neighboring emergency-response departments.
Mayor Ted Nitsky and council members recognized outgoing and current fire chiefs, thanked multiple neighboring departments for mutual aid and cooperation, and presided over the pinning of the newly appointed fire chief (Joe DeBoer) and the pinning for the police lieutenant, JJ Bettsgar, who had been previously sworn in. Mayor Nitsky praised the multi-generational service of Port Washington fire leadership and invited attendees to a reception at the firehouse after the meeting.
Mayor Nitsky read a proclamation declaring Jan. 9, 2025, to be National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in Port Washington, citing officers’ roles in community safety and schools. He said the council and community were grateful for officers’ service and encouraged citizen recognition of police work that week.
City staff also introduced Matt Nugent as the new city attorney during mayor’s business. Staff announced a $25,000 grant awarded to parks and recreation and that park reservations for 2025 are open. The council then proceeded to regular business.
