The Casa Grande City Council on Monday authorized a purchase agreement with Freightliner of Arizona LLC and refurbishment work on an automated side-load trash truck in an action recorded as Resolution 5740.
City staff said the council authorized the city manager to execute a purchase agreement not to exceed $304,574 to buy a Freightliner Lehi dash 40 chassis and refurbish an existing Scorpion side-load packer body for solid waste operations. Staff told the council the existing unit had exceeded its original seven-year expected life and has been used for roughly 12 years.
The staff presentation noted the Scorpion packer body is in good condition and refurbishment would save about $115,000 compared with replacing the entire vehicle. Staff said funds for the purchase are available in the current budget and estimated the refurbishment would take about three and a half months. Council members asked whether the body work would be done in-house; staff said an outside vendor would perform the rebuild and that reserve vehicles would cover operations during the refurbishment.
Council approved the resolution by roll call vote with all members voting yes.
The authorization directs the city manager to execute the purchase order or contract and to expend public funds under the terms described in Resolution 5740. Staff said schedule and staging will be coordinated to minimize operational impacts while the vehicle is out of service.
