Natural Resource Board members pick leads for Sustainable Sebastian initiatives

Members of the City of Sebastian Natural Resource Board selected individual champions for the six broad initiatives in the Sustainable Sebastian five‑year plan during their Jan. 7 meeting.
The board’s staff liaison said the champions will take responsibility for specific subtasks under each initiative and that staff will produce an expanded task list and a timeline for next steps. Members were encouraged to form informal subcommittees and to recruit backups when tasks require attending other commission or city‑department meetings.
Board members volunteered by item. Daniel (board member) said he favored initiative 4, related to food waste and possible agricultural reuse with local farmers. Donna Billman volunteered to lead initiative 1, focused on reducing single‑use plastics and expanding recycling outreach to small businesses. Matthew Krause said he would champion initiative 3, which includes public polling, and would also help with two education programs in initiative 6 (noise and light pollution). One member identified as Veil said water protection (initiative 5) was their top choice and listed initiative 4 as a second choice. Miss Billman reiterated interest in initiative 2, noting unfinished work there. Several members said they planned to help across multiple initiatives rather than restricting themselves to a single task.
Staff reiterated that an expanded, fleshed‑out task list will be circulated before the next meeting and that champions should reach out to staff if they need additional support. Board members agreed that pairing each initiative lead with at least one backup or partner would help ensure coverage for external meetings or scheduling conflicts.
The board did not take a formal vote on champion assignments at the Jan. 7 meeting; members were asked to confirm availability and specific time slots at the next meeting when the expanded task list is distributed.
The board set the Sustainable Sebastian action plan as the first item for the Feb. 4 meeting agenda, with a call for members to review the expanded task list in advance.
